Nearby is Ventosa, an ancient hilltop village. The tall square Medieval tower formed part of a defence system together with the towers of nearby Castelforte and Suio, which dominated the Garigliano Plain and the coastline. The church of San Martino was built on the site of a small Benedictine monastery dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, which was abandoned in the fourteenth century by the Benedictines.
In Ventosa they still carrying on some of the traditional old crafts, such as basket making using stramme. This is a wild herbaceous grass that grows in bushy clumps up to a metre in height. Its leaves are long, straight, and tough with sharp edges. The plant has been known since antiquity and was used for making baskets, containers, saddles, rustic seats for chairs made of plaited stramme leaves, and also for making brooms, twine and ropes.
Traditionally the leaves are cut before sunrise, when the bush is still wet with dew. The leaves are is then subjected to a beating with a wooden tool to make them more pliable, before being woven into long plaited strips.
